Talking+Dancing with Anna Major: Skin, Bones and Feelings

During this session I would like to share my thoughts on Bodily awareness/ Somatic sensing and taking the time to be Present with our feelings. I find the two are deeply connected, our bodies store our experiences as living beings, and through driving the focus of attention to different aspects of our soma, we can discover the inner rooms of our being, that otherwise might stay hidden.
We will touch upon theory and methods from the fields of movement improvisation, movement research, postmodern performance, dance movement therapy and arts therapy.
After the introduction we will dive right in, and become slow and quiet to allow our Selves to sense, and allow to be, parts of ourselves, which we’ve been turning away from.
***
Anna Major is a maker of things and doesn’t like art that cannot be touched. She has a deep desire to cut the sh*t and live life the way it nourishes her being. She thinks if we all did that, we would find ourselves moving and painting and observing clouds, water, plants, bugs, shapes and colors around us. She is looking for ways to balance this desire with the world that surrounds her, and share things she found with others.

Speaking+Dancing with Thora Hohberg: The intangible art

Fleeting, intangible, momentary, moving, but then also fleeting again.
Sure, dancing can be filmed, you can discuss it, measure muscles, feel an echo of the experience in your own body… And that’s it – isn’t it?

I found my way to dance in rebellion against a society in which life and love are tied to abstract conditions and fear, which exploits all that and those who make a comfortable life possible for us (including the fight against suppressed doubts), often denies them any respect and in which seemingly nothing is simply allowed to be what it is.
Originally I wanted to join a primitive people/indigenous tribe somewhere in the world, but as a teenager I didn’t find my way there, but instead danced with traveling musicians on the streets of Berlin and was completely swallowed up by the maelstrom of the movement.

Since 2013 I have been dancing in various groups, institutions and projects, whereby I am particularly interested in encounters with people and their very different stories, with places, different forms of expression and the themes and feelings that being human entails.

The fascination for indigenous cultures and the question of the origin of dance – both personally and in a cultural and evolutionary context – still accompanies me and I would like to invite you to pursue the following questions with some theoretical input, but above all in experiments:

– What is dancing?
– Where does it come from?
– What does dancing do to me?
– What does dancing make me do?
– Why do I dance?

THE BOX

A life away from conventions is usually accompanied by oblique looks. But should we be guided by tradition or go our own way? Even if the customs and norms of society provide support, many of them can have a limiting effect on individual development.

What happens when we break with the patterns that have been cultivated for generations? What it would be like to see the world once again through the unbiased eyes of a child…
“The Box” is a contemporary dance piece that deals with these questions.

They dance for their lives, but the choreography is far from finished and the performance is just around the corner.

The joint process develops into a retrospective of their youth and a liberating dance experience.

A dance theater about the movement back to oneself.

In cooperation, the TanzCompanyELLA and the “Wetterleuchten” show in an upbeat and humorous way the mixed journey of three women who are faced with the decision of being on fire for something or being burnt out.

MENTAL MUSCLE

Somewhere between mental effort, care work and diffuse risk awareness – that is mental load. The work behind the scenes. Or also: weightlifting for invisibility. A deeply feminine* sport. But where there is mental load, shouldn’t there also be mental muscle?

Mental Muscle is a performative walk at the points of friction between movement, dance, installation and gender research that invites you to think, walk and carry along.

Mental load means having to think about everything – who thinks about it? Mental load means emotional work – who takes responsibility? Mental load is invisible – most of the time. Sometimes, however, the load is also reflected in real weights.

Share Your Darlings

Saturday, 28 & Sunday, 29 January 2023

Tanzhaus Graz, Lagergasse 57, 8020 Graz

“Share Your Darlings” is a sharing and feeback format, that was developed by a group of dancers and performers in Graz some years ago. The idea is to share work in progress, an idea, a first rough sketch – anything you want feedback on. Participants are very much invited to be bold and brave and also to ask for feedback on very specific details or aspects.

Each presentation gets a 15mins slot (plus 15mins feedback) and can be given by one to four people.

It is possible to participate without presenting, but there are no journalists, dramaturgs or festival organizers invited, the space is safe for exploration. Furthermore, everyone has to be present for the entire time.

When we choose the streets as our habitat as performers, we are mostly not alone in it. We share that stage with lots of other people performing and our art somehow becomes part of “real” life. The main character is maybe not us anymore but a stranger, who passes by as we do our thing. We can control many things: we can study the streets, its architecture, its conventions, its rhythms, its variables during to day and night, workday or weekend, season, weather conditions, sun position, etc., but something unexpected will meet us every single time we go out there connecting with the place, the people and the pigeons. A relation and maybe a revelation between the stranger, the surprise and us, making the limitations of our public places visible with our bodies. Our streets are like mirrors of our societies and the decision to perform there is a beautiful risk that can lead to transformation in many ways.

Public relations work for a project today usually starts with building an (online) community with which I communicate via my own (social) media. Apart from that, however, it is still the traditional media that allow us to reach a broad public beyond our own bubble. Editorial reports in newspapers, television and radio are multipliers, have a high symbolic value and are important evidence for funding bodies, sponsors and supporters.
This workshop is about public relations in general and press relations in particular. Heide Oberegger from the perspective of a press officer and Christoph Hartner from the perspective of a journalist talk about the dos and don’ts of press relations and how a project makes it into the newspaper.

BAR 101

Often norms and conventions, a sense of duty or necessity drive us into situations that disguise our true selves and from which we secretly want to escape. Feelings such as fear, anger or hopelessness can gain the upper hand. A contemporary dance piece that expresses these conflicts artistically. TANZ GRAZ & spleen*graz

FLOW

Kaiserfeldgasse, 8010 Graz (open air) I free admission

Eight dancers embark on a quest: with a clear goal in mind and full concentration, they bravely face the area between control and loss of control and seek precisely this moment of flow at the transition between under- and overload. The result is a dance for its own sake as an infectious invitation to be with oneself and shake off all worries and fears.

The performance FLOW was created in a two-week dance workshop with the German choreographer Lin Verleger, who combines urban and contemporary dance in his choreographies and develops his own aesthetic together with the dancers.

Concept & Choreography: Lin Verleger
Dramaturgical advice & production management: Hanni Westphal

spleen*drive: ATHMEN

A physical confrontation with a little something

It will be the first and the last thing I do, and in between I will often think about what that means. Take in, release, suck in, push out, I will breathe for a lifetime and I will rarely notice it. I will gasp for air, suck it in, scream and be quiet. My body and the air will accompany me like a constant metronome, on, off, on, off, off. And I will scream and I will be quiet and I will rarely realize what that means.

Behind the curtain of WOMAN HOOD – The journey of the creation process
WOMAN HOOD is a feminist dance performance created in 6 months from September 2020 to March 2021.
How did the artist come up with the ideas? What does it have to do with her? What (re-)paths were taken during the development process? What is WOMAN HOOD all about? Which meanings are in the room and which are open?
Who was involved in the team? How were the costumes created? How was the music selected?
All this and more will be answered. Questions are also welcome.

SNORING

Sonja, Cathi and Barbara live next door to each other in a high-rise building, each on their own. Sometimes they feel lonely, but they get through the day with their quirky habits and ritualized routines. They also no longer know how to contact someone. They wouldn’t dare start a conversation with their neighbor.
But one day, strange things happen. Things like bags or phones suddenly disappear and reappear in the neighboring apartments. Very slowly and imperceptibly, the objects weave an invisible web between the individual figures, gradually creating a connection between them that becomes ever closer.

A dance theater about being alone and rediscovering the lightness of life together.

“WE ARE MADE OF SUCH STUFF AS DREAMS ARE…”

Shakespeare short cuts – from the middle of the pandemic

Shakespeare’s dramas have a timeless appeal, the thematic richness is fascinating: Historical and fairy-tale themes are treated, social criticism meets entertainment and satire. Shakespeare was able to bring the complexity and ambivalence of human feelings, (in)human actions and psychological states to the stage like no other. It is the dichotomy that makes his characters so exciting: domination versus oppression, devotion versus rebellion, angel versus demon, human versus mythical creature, victim versus perpetrator.

WOMAN HOOD

In the contemporary dance performance “Woman Hood”, the audience is confronted with extraordinary female figures such as Medea, the Amazon, the madwoman and the meaning of sisterhood. These four concepts, alongside hand-picked music and artistic costumes, form the basic framework, which is complemented by magic and plenty of humor. Ursula Graber plays with these questions of how a woman can and wants to be today.

“It’s impressive what Graber conjures up and/or bangs out on stage with remarkably powerful, self-confidently lascivious and (mostly concealed) sensitive and emotional femininity. It amuses, it gets under your skin and it also hurts. In any case, it achieves something, this “self-evident” and therefore credible action. The diversity in what is addressed or even associated is a remarkable achievement given the reduction of the means used; convincing in its straightforwardness, which is based on creative artistic skill.” Eveline Koberg, dance critic

CRAZY

an interactive online performance

“Verrückte” invites the audience into a space of stories. Together we will hear voices – ours, yours and those of female artists, who were deemed mad because they did not fit in as women* in society.
What are all the meanings of the word “verrückt” (mad)? Where do we draw the line between creativity and madness? How much mental suffering does art need – or does it, at all?
After a year of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are aware that the virus causes not only rising numbers of infections. Between performance, audio-piece and first aid course in mental health we question stigmas and romanticized ideas around mental suffering or wellbeing and the image of the mad artist.
Come visit us in our online group practice/laboratory/studio – simply from the safe space of your choice. It will be an attempt to have an honest conversation about sensitive experiences in the form of a performance in digital space.

ACCIDENT

Do humans, in contrast to all other animals, succumb to their intemperance despite better knowledge and an increased ability to reflect? To what extent is this reinforced by apparent group dynamics? Our socially accepted consumer behavior seems to have long exceeded the resources available to us. Do we recognize the limits of our planet or must bans regulate our behaviour? Is the constant desire for more a fundamentally human characteristic or can conscious renunciation also be enriching?

… These are questions that the young, contemporary Graz-based dance company subsTanz, led by choreographer Xianghui Zeng, asks itself in its second stage production.

MAR

“Mar” is the second part of Solo Studies, a trilogy of solo performances inspired by migration movements. Solo Studies stems from the artist’s move from South America to Central Europe, which has made her more sensitive and attentive to questions of identity, representativeness, belonging and memory. Each solo has a female figure as its axis, which is limited to a certain context and a certain position. From there, she explores how slowness and endurance can affect both her body and the body of each person present at the performative event. Take your time, be present, look closely and listen: Perhaps this is the only way to engage with these performances; perhaps this is also the only way to better understand the world we live in.

The fun of the spoilsport. Between pleasure and frustration.

The contemporary dancer Ursula Graber gives free rein to her creativity in a solo evening. To this end, she asks herself questions about feminism, the emancipation of pleasure and role models. Inspired by critical feminist theories and burlesque dance, she creates a humorous and personal performance that invites you to marvel and reflect. “Are all feminists spoilsports?”

This November in Graz is all about contemporary dance!

Three dance productions and the Dance on Screen dance film festival are on the program: The Loose Collective is showing the third part of the trilogy “On Earth” at the Kristallwerk (premiere: November 15, 2019). This is followed by “Hunger” by and with Veza Maria Fernandez Wenger and Christina Lederhaas at Volkshaus Graz (premiere: November 19, 2019). Emese Horti

“Third Culture Kid”

“Where are you from?” Emese was born in Budapest, but speaks perfect Styrian. In her new dance theater piece “Third Culture Kid”, she deals with the questions: Where do we come from? How important is that? And what is the right answer to this? A third culture child struggles with such questions. In times of globalization, more and more children are growing up in and moving between several cultures.

TALK AND DANCE #1

Fall is the time to apply for funding. Of course, there is no recipe for success as to what a good application should look like.

But there are a lot of things to consider. tanzNetz Graz has two experienced cultural managers –

Katharina Dilena (Assistant to the Management DAS ANDERE THEATER) and Monika Klengel (Managing Director Theater im Bahnhof) –

to give suggestions and tips for a successful application in a two-hour workshop.

Then there is dancing, and lots of it.

Dancing on the Rooftop

In cooperation with IGTanz Steiermark, we invite you to a first networking event around us,

to present our offer and our vision and to get to know each other.

Afterwards you can dance to the sounds of the SOULbRÜDER! The soul brothers are four DJs,

who appreciate different genres, but deep in their hearts only have room for snappy funk and soul.
